More Provisions from Nature

The eating adventure continues...

We went for a walk to gather more acorns (to play with, not to eat.) We ended up coming with a grouse.

The trails in our neighborhood snake through woods and occasionally behind people's houses. As we were nearing one of our neighbor's houses, my mom said, "Look there goes a grouse!"

BAM!

Not "BAM!" like a gun shot because the only guns we had were squirt guns.

But "BAM!" like it crashed into the window of our neighbor's house. My mom, Amanda and Tristen ran ahead to check on the bird. It had broken neck and was dead. There was no sense in letting it go to waste so we brought it home. We called another neighbor to help us come clean it since Mike was working out of town today.

Ana wouldn't go anywhere near the bird but Tali was quite enthralled with it. It's now simmering in our crockpot. :)

Seriously, your life is so cool.

Have I ever told you I think Tali and Lydi look alike? I think they do.

Twas the day before Tyler's bday when all through the house

Not a creature was stirring, except a goofy old grouse

When out on the lawn there arose such a clatter.

Everyone ran out to see what was the matter.

Away to the window they flew like a flash

Tore open the shutters and threw up the sash

When, what to their wondering eyes should appear

But a huge grouse...DEAD! Oh dear!!

With Mom, so lively and quick
she knew in a moment, she had the perfect trick.

More rapid than fast food, tonight's dinner came.

she was so excited she whistled and shouted and called them by name!

Tyler! Tony! Amanda! Christiana! Taliatha! I think we scored a winner!

Come see what mom's gonna cook for dinner!

They all ran to see with great curiosity.

Could it be crickets, boiled acorns...oh what could it be?!

There laid a bird with an obvious broken neck.

While a few kids was enthralled the other were like "what the heck!!"

Mom spoke not a word and went straight to work.

Plucking and de-feathering and turned with a jerk.

she wondered if choc crickets would be a great dessert.

Naw...then the kids would have really thought she was beserk.

She sprang to the cabinets and set out the dishes

Dinner was done and smelled delicious

They all ate with anticipation and great gladness

but for the bird it was nothing but sadness

Never to fly again or soar like an eagle

but in now in someone's tummy that made them quite full

A word of wisdom to birds in flight.

watch out for windows, especially at night!
